MP Gallant Commemorates the Passing of Canada’s last Remaining Great War Veteran John Babcock

Renfrew, Ontario… Cheryl Gallant, MP Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, joins all Canadians in sending condolences to the family of A/-Lance Corporal John Babcock. Mr. Babcock was the last surviving Veteran of the first Great War 1914-1918. He was born July 23, 1900, near Kingston, Ontario.
“I was asked by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to present a letter on his behalf when Jack, which he liked to be called rather than John, turned 108 years old,” said Cheryl Gallant, MP. “The Prime Minister knows of my deep and abiding interest in our military family. It was an honour for me to have had the opportunity to meet the man who at that time was Canada’s last remaining Great War Veteran.”
“It is important to remember the sacrifices made by the men and women who answer their country’s call in time of need. This is even more true today with a new generation of Veterans in our midst, having served in places like Afghanistan.”
